The second amendment gives American people the right to keep and bear arms. The only way to change that is through an amendment to the constitution.
It will never pass through the house and Senate especially as it currently exists.
Even if it should, it would never gain enough votes from the states.
Im not saying that something should not be done, it's just that I don't see the necessary steps being taken.
Im definitely in favor of background checks to keep crazy people from being able to buy firearms.

Now that it's possible for firearms to be "printed" I can't see how you can fully control people who want a gun from getting a gun.
I think that demonizing AR-15's is helpful. They are no different than any other .22 caliber semi automatic rifle, they just look a bit scarier. Calling them assault weapons is not realistic.
Any attempt at regulation must be in line with the Constitution and I don't know what could be done to make that possible.
I would like to see something happen to change regulations for firearms purchases, I just don't know what it could be.
High capacity magazines don't really make much difference. In the case of AR-15's I saw first hand that troops would simply tape together 3-5: magazines to make it easier and faster to reload a fresh magazine. I saw very few higher capacity magazines used because they have a tendency to jam. The 5.56 NATO round is not more dangerous than a 30 caliber round.
What makes them leathal is that they don't penentrate through and through, they hit a bone and tumble through the body causing more damage.
The "carrier" which is what attaches to the barrel can be swapped out for a larger caliber one which makes them more versatile.

We are still left with the second amendment and the fact that after prohibition, no politician wants to vote for taking away a right secured by the Constitution. The law of unintended consequences is also something that can't be planned for. There's a direct link between prohibition and the rise in power of the Mafia.
Until there's a change in the political will power in politicians or a Supreme Court ruling, I am sad to say I don't believe anything is going to change.
