Wow! Trump really had no idea what was going on after the death of George Floyd. From what Trump states, he was praising the “show of strength” with the National Guard. Meanwhile, Gov. Walz was saying that people were upset and grieving after they watched a man die for 8 minutes. And that there was a Catalyst for the action the police took.
That Catalyst, though he doesn’t say it straight out, was the way Trump himself had spent the 3-years prior to the death of Mr. Floyd stoking the level of hate, racism, distrust, anger, and divisiveness throughout our country. All the years of his presidency, up until 2020. All the legal, and legislative fights at the state and federal levels to condemn hate speech, to make hate acts illegal. All of that work, all of that legislation went out the window when Trump took office; especially, after he made that statement that there were “good people ……… on both sides” after the tragedy in Charlottesville.
Trump wasn’t hearing what Gov. Walz was saying. Gov. Walz was saying that people had the right to peacefully protest the profiling, and racism that contributed to the death of Mr. Floyd. Gov. Walz had engaged with Civic leaders, and peaceful protestors. He wanted to ensure that the peaceful protesters had a safe space in which to hold their protest. Meanwhile, all Trump saw was “boots on the ground”. I’m sure Trump thought the National Guard was there to keep the protesters suppressed, not to protect the protesters while they took advantage of their civil right to gather peacefully in protest of an action that needs to be changed, or a civil liberty that has been trounced, stomped into the ground.
Trump completely missed the point of what Walz told him. Gov. Walz said that because there were “bad actors” involved, and people grieving don’t always allow for the most peaceful of interactions. All Walz wanted was to allow the people their right to gather and protest peacefully, without the interference of other possible, unidentified “bad actors” in law enforcement that might cause a change from peaceful protest to riot. He was trying to be preventative, not suppressive of people’s civil rights as Trump thought (because Trump doesn’t know what the constitution states, or what the laws of our country are)!
