I work in the transportation industry. Buses and trains operate at night like a rolling homeless shelter, many of the homeless that ride at night to stay off the streets are carrying knives and guns so being around them is risky . We are in perilous times .

I'm a blind individual who lives in a suburb of the twin cities in minnesota. When it comes to riding public transit, I would have to say that the biggest change for me pre-pandemic and post-pandemic has been the fact that I don't travel outside of my neighborhood nearly as much as I used to. There are certain bus routes that I avoid because of either scary encounters or just getting a bad vibe in general while traveling through certain neighborhoods. I don't travel to either downtown unless I have to these days and I am much more likely to use either rideshare or a combination of rideshare and public transit to accomplish these outings. I generally avoid the light rail and particularly the green line if I can help it due to a feeling that anything goes on the train. I'm glad that Anna spoke about the aggregate impact of these assaults on the willingness of The operators who remain to continue working, let alone the agencies prospects for recruiting new operators. I've had some drivers snap at me for asking them very basic questions about their routes. After months of being short-staffed, the private company that operates the bus route that goes by my apartment decided to cut the number of buses on the route from 2 down to one which meant that for example if I wanted to go to the grocery store, I could take the bus to the store but unless I wanted to wait two and a half hours for that same bus that dropped me off to come back and take me home, I would have to use rideshare or some other form of transportation to get home quickly. The good news is that as the number of drivers rebounded, the company re-added the second bus to the route a few months ago. While I support and his comments about the need to reform the prisons to make them more rehabilitative, I view such a policy push to be an extremely heavy lift in a country where not only do you have some progressives who feel that these individuals should not even be in jail in the first place but you also have a significant proportion of conservatives who believe that such individuals are not worthy of such efforts and that we should just lock them all up and throw away the keys. Quite frankly I'm glad that Anna covered this story.

It seems to me that the increase in violence coincides with the increase in fentanyl use. My personal and continuing experience with a family member that went from heroin use to fentanyl use approximately four years ago is that, after he uses fentanyl, he would pass as having mental illness. He also exhibits violent outbursts. Just a thought that maybe some of the mental illness we are seeing today is from drug use. This is not an easy issue to solve but needs to be a priority and Anna, I feel the same way you do. This is not acceptable.
