I don’t know what her case was, but sometimes executives get guaranteed bonuses as part of their employment agreement. I received bonuses to leave my current company to go work for another one and also as part of an acquisition of a company I owned. In both cases, I had lawyers review the agreement to make sure I receive the payout because I’m actually forgoing other compensation to get it. Mine were not on the order of what CEOs get, but the scenario is the same. That’s different than bonuses that are clearly tied to company profits as also spelled out in employment agreements. If you wanted guaranteed bonuses in exchange for your skills, you needed to negotiate it into the agreement. I don’t think it’s a culture thing. It’s a legal thing. You can’t not pay someone money they are legally entitled to or you will get sued.

I have never .... ever... in my working career ever expected bonuses at years end. I go as far as to not even expect years evaluation / performance raises. My take on this issue is that if your not satisfied with your current position... your current pay scale... you make a move. You negotiate your next position to include what it is you think your worth... but to think your deserving of a bonus or raise ... just because ... is kind of insane.

I don’t follow most of these comments. This lady and the employees she’s speaking to have different jobs, with different goals and objectives. It sounds to me like some group of the employees haven’t met their goal to receive a bonus so why would they get one? It’s not as if they weren’t paid at all for the work they DID do. And her compensation really has nothing to do with the other employees. I’m sure the board set goals for her. Maybe she spent the whole year grinding to meet her goals and was rewarded in return. What’s wrong with that?

The issues most likely came from the top and their inability to listen to their employees about how the business environment is changing. That 26 mil is her responsibility as the CEO.

As a small business owner, normally I side with management when you are facing a massive increase in operating expenses. If you are a business losing money, and you are working your butt off just to make payroll, it is a bit disheartening when employees are not empathetic to the struggles of the owner but instead asking for "bonuses" or "perks" that usually only come when revenues are good. However, in this case, they had a $26 million dollar goal. Her pay was $1.1 million with about $5.5 million in stock options. Her compensation represented more than 25% of the shortfall. She could have chosen her rallying words a tad better.
