Like with Freedom too, it's taken completely out of context and often used to justify immoral conduct. We all know that moral is subject however we also observe that objective moral is not always the best solution for societies. History is full of examples of misconduct in the guise of freedom.
The question should always be what one is willing to tolerate. Intolerance is often demonized and in many cases it probably proved positive for so many cultures. Cultural codes of conduct is in fact "we will not tolerate your way of life for whatever valid reasons". There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Many who disagree with a culture are free to exercise their rights outside those cultures and that's how diversity is born. Similarly that is what a republic is founded on, intolerance. The early days people rejected the culture of monarchs and formed republics which gave the people power rather than an elite few. This kind of tolerance is necessary to protect the freedom defined by a set of moral codes. A republic does recognize and protect all rights within a constitution of course and technically speaking it does not tolerate democracy - a term misused and misunderstood today. Democracy is really inviting that bad guys to take away your power whereas a republic does not allow that.
So intolerance should not be demonized and those who trick you into believing you have a right to exercise your immoral conduct, is in fact the cause for demise in any republic. Cogitate that.
