I worked for a dentist once and one day he held up a tiny vial of something (I don't remember what it is, but it was regularly used and necessary for common procedures) and asked me to guess how much it costs. I threw out a number, and he said $150 for this (it was about 1 oz).
He then told me that it used to be a cheap as rubbing alcohol, but a drug company bought the patent and hiked up the price by the thousands %.
