A serial killer a thousand years ago was simply the guy who dominated over all others, leading to him being the chief, king, top lord. It was far better to be with a guy who could kill others than a guy who couldn't back when death was always knocking on everyone's door. He is essentially demonstrating strength and power over everyone else.
It's not as if women can't find men who have strength and power while still being theoretically good, such as soldiers. They prefer villains over superheroes because a hero will sacrifice you to save the world, but a villain would, if you were the only person he loved, let the world burn to save you. Narcissistic, yes, but it might mean you and your children live instead of having everyone die. I'm often reminded of Rick from The Walking Dead, who was a good and kind man, therefore would have had a hard time not sharing food and supplies with everyone, even if it led to his own family's starvation and destitution.
A man who is willing to do anything to be successful is also the man who will likely succeed. A man inhibited by what is morally right will not.
The last aspect is seen in just about every romance novel written by a woman in that if a man can be seen as bad or morally inferior to the woman, this gives her power over him and she can essentially dictate the relationship as she likes. She teaches him that he is bad, he accepts it and realizes that he would do anything to keep her in his life and therefore becomes like her servant or slave. He sees her as the angel of light to his darkness, he's so bad and she's so good and he would do anything in the world to deserve her. It's quite messed up psychologically, but this is how women write their romances like Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Twilight 50 Shades of Grey, etc.

female sexuality many times involves being bottom. feeling and even being abused. so many women have these sexual fantasies.
where as with males it mostly is the opposite. the sexual thoughts many men have would get them thrown in a cage.
the biggest problem with this is that most people don't want this to be true, because they would have to admit that even their sexuality has some fucked up aspects in it. this is even more true for the vast majority of women as female sexuality has indeed been oppressed throughout most of humanities time. but since the second wave of feminism and the absorption/exploitation of feminism into the capitalist system, we now live in a complete reverse society (at least in the west) where females have almost complete sexual freedom and men's sexuality is the one that is being oppressed more and more. of course feminists, most women and most people in general don't want to hear this. it is a taboo to talk about it. it is something that isn't allowed to be and therefore it just isn't.
