I'm not a lawyer. But I suspect in court this case of discrimination would be thrown out since it is a private business. But...from a business perspective it is simply bad business and the owner of that business, if they care about maintaining their integrity and profits, would fire that employee. In Colorado, a cake business refused service to a same sex couple. I think the business won in court. But the bad press most likely hurt their sales.

Pathetic response from Officeworks given that it was this employees second offence. She should have been fired, particularly given that the area has the highest Jewish population in the Melbouirne suburbs. Firing her would have been the only appropriate response to ensure that they did not lose customers in that area. Boycotting the whole store or the company would only disadvantage employees who simply wanted to do a job without their political or religious beliefs interfering. I hope commonsense prevails and they deal with this employee properly to avoid a wider backlash.

The Herald Sun newspaper reported that this was the SECOND time she committed a similar offence. She was supposed to visit the Holocaust centre after the first transgression. So to OfficeWorks I say you are pathetic and do not take these matters seriously! The perpetrator should either have been suspended, received a final written warning detailing the consequences of and repeat or be terminated. The spin is plainly just weak and BS. OfficeWorks does not value its brand or its customers. Solution was to have another employee to process the customer request.
