This has been around a lot longer than that. I was tested for, passed the test, and then rejected for the MGM* program in California in I want to say either late 1976 or early 1977, the rejection being because I am white. Not only that but the person told my father they thought we were hispanic or they would not have tested me knowing we were white. My father responded to the person in Spanish, asked me a question in Spanish and I responded in Spanish. The interviewer literally said "nice try" and ended the conversation.
(We're Portuguese-Americans though lol. We called ourselves Americans in any case, never had some reason to throw my ancestry in people's faces like it's some weird "credit" I'm supposed to be given. Because we lived in East LA, growing up we were expected to learn and be able to speak Spanish, our parents were simply practical people)

When a child is Gifted AND THERE ARE SOME BLACKS WHO ARE TOO it is literally torture for that gifted child to sit in class undifferentiated and be forced to SLOW DOWN their learning. Smart children need to be challenged in class just a bit to stretch their academic abilities and help them reach their fullest academic potential. It is not fair to stamp out programs that gifted children need to thrive. It’s the same thing as cutting “special” education for the children who need them….

The school still provides programs for those students with special needs that perform below what the average student then why shouldn’t they address the needs of the gifted students too? My daughter was in the gifted and talented program when she was in school and national honor society and this was big help to her. They have more complex subjects which challenge the students and helps them prepare for college. She is now a nurse practitioner.

I think that you are a bit mistaken here I’m not saying that the advanced children’s gifts won’t flatten a bit, but I think we will end up happening is that the advanced children will end up being responsible for teaching the less advanced children and essentially doing the teachers job for her. I was a gifted child, and I found that this was somewhat the case, even when I was in school.
