It was because of American doctors, as another poster has said, that killed him not the assassin, not just because of lack of hygiene though but because they would not accept the use of local and/or anaesthetics because they had been developed in Europe.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Garfield residence/museum in Ohio. It was well worth it as I learned a great deal about a President that not much is ever said about due to his term in office cut short by assassination.
