I actually got one of these letters from the “supposedly IRS”. It looked like the real thing, but one error tipped me off. It had the wrong year and I knew it was far too much money for that year. We could not have made that big of a mistake . So we reported it to the IRS. Never heard anything about it from that time.

A living revocable trust is a better idea for financial since you can update it at anytime. Better yet, own everything material in limited partnerships and capitol gains assets in a limited remainder trust. These legal entities, trusts and partnerships survive after you are gone and don't need to be dissolved unless they no longer have a purpose or trustworthy manager, and thus can bypass probate and estate tax. You might use a will or other agreements to direct who gets your shares/interest.
