PLEASE, can we also get rid of all the special education promoting programs like No Child Left Behind and Least Restrictive Environment? (Old names, I know) The schools are being forced to place special ed students (SpEd) into mainstream classrooms for SOCIALIZATION.
The problem? They cannot do the work level at the pace their peers can, so the teachers are stuck tutoring the SpEd students during class or assigning other students to be tutors instead of progressing the class at a pace the other students can tolerate. Either that or the SpEd kids are bored and cause discipline problems and distractions during class.
And Least Restrictive Environment decimated the classroom environment for the OTHER children. For example, there is a 6th grader in my school who is non-verbal and who is estimated to be at a 1 year old mental level. He is mainstreamed, but he'll moan, laugh, and wail during class. His noise-making makes it difficult for others to speak and be heard. The teachers must repeat and repeat themselves to be sure the other students are hearing the lessons over the SpEd student's noises. It is QUITE distracting.
The current regulations protecting SpEd students are limiting the educational advancement of the non-SpEd students.
