The majority of the 300 slaves on his estate belonged to his wife and Washington couldn't legally do anything about their plight except treating them well. I don't remember specifics as school was a long time ago but they belonged to his wife's family or a previous Husband who had passed and no one could do anything about it.

Regions like Europe and what areas we now know as Asia, the Middle East and Africa, at the time of George Washington's birth, had structural slavery for thousands of years. And yes, at times, these regions had evolution through different countries, rulers, religions and societies. Even throughout the Americas, before the white man. But, slavery around the world was normal in the 1720's.

The south largely joined the union with the aim of independence to protect their slave interests from London, the North went with independence with the aim of union. These intertwined aims eventually contradicted each other leading to the Civil War.

Several of the founders wanted to free their slaves, but couldn't. Slaves were property attached to thei estates and most if those were heavily mortgaged to help finance the Revolution. As such they couldn't be freed ir sold until those mortgages were paid off. So really, it was the bankers and money lenders who kept them in skavery not the plantation owners. Just like they keep us all in financial slavery today.

The problem with your video is you do not break down the term slave because the majority of people at that time we’re bond servant, slaves, meaning they borrowed money or stole something and they had to work until they paid it off. No different than today the majority of students coming out of university people who get a mortgage people who sign a contract with a company or bond, servant, slaves.
