When an army loses its main commander, it can result in a rout, which is a disorganized retreat of the troops. This phenomenon can be explained by several psychological and strategic factors. The loss of morale is one of the most significant: the disappearance of a charismatic or strategically essential leader often creates a sense of disorientation and panic among the soldiers, making them unable to continue fighting. Furthermore, the surprise effect linked to the sudden loss of command can be perceived by the troops as a sign of imminent defeat. The absence of command then becomes a factor of chaos: orders are no longer clear, and soldiers do not know whom to obey. Lastly, mass psychology plays a crucial role, as fear can spread quickly through the ranks, leading even disciplined troops to disorganized retreat. In antiquity, the Battle of Cannae in 216 BCE is a striking example. During this confrontation between Romans and Carthaginians, the fall of many Roman officers demoralized the troops, who attempted to flee from Hannibal's encirclement. Panic led to a total rout, causing significant losses for Rome. Similarly, during the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396, European crusaders, after the capture of their leaders, became disorganized and were annihilated by the Ottomans. In modern times, the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 shows a similar phenomenon: after Napoleon's defeat, the French troops, deprived of their commander, panicked and dispersed despite attempts by some officers to rally the men. However, some armies managed to overcome the loss of their commander and maintain cohesion. During the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BCE, Alexander the Great, although wounded, could have seen his army demoralized. Nevertheless, thanks to the discipline of his troops and a well-organized command structure, his generals were able to continue the attack, leading to a decisive victory. Similarly, during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 during the American Civil War, the Union army managed to reorganize despite the death of its commander, John Reynolds, which allowed them to withstand Confederate assaults and secure victory. Another example is the Battle of El Alamein in 1942, where British forces managed to maintain their cohesion despite significant losses among officers, thanks to solid organization and preparation of subordinate officers to take over. These examples show that the success or failure of an army facing the loss of its commander depends primarily on its ability to maintain discipline and react quickly to prevent panic. A flexible command structure and adequate preparation of subordinate officers are essential to prevent a rout and turn an unfavorable situation into an opportunity for victory.
