The regular subscription/paying once for a show or something is the best model, but it usually doesn't pay enough compared to regular advertising

In the US we have the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Partially funded by the federal government. The local stations that carry PBS exist mostly from donations from regular people. Periodically these local stations will have "donation drives" where for 30 minutes or so between programs they beg almost exactly like the first dude. They've been doing this for decades.
