Cleetus McFarland flew his Huges 500 chopper up from Florida to Hickory NY and he was on of the 37 private helicopters. He had no problems and they sent him in to some place where his bird could fit tight spots. He took his wife with him. He went back home only to have to deal with Milton blowing in to his home area.
the $750 was to get people out of there. I tired of having people comparing it to the immigrants. so much misinformation.
I made 3 trips out there and ran a front end loader to make roads with the roads were washed out. It's going to take years to rebuild. I-40 in to Tenn wont be ready till Sep 2025 and I-26 in to Tn around May 2025. Not sure about I-26 to Hendersonville.
BTW a fire dept official has no power to arrest anyone. More than likely he a volunteer who knows nothing about the law.

As Cletus said ,when you put on that flight suit ...your in duty mode ...............my personal thoughts are ....the powers that be..take credit for the work of others who were first in ...last out ....flash ego's have no place in natural disaster areas........the Army took 200 in mogie trucks when they drove in the floods but told me......by a corporal in charge SIR we can't get back orders from above your on your own for a week till waters subside & safe to come back ...I just shook my head and went back to my 200 souls......with the bad News no help coming ....yes I was pissed off told my own sister who has military husband ,we need Helicopters not politicians on TV beating their own drums 🎉🎉🎉

the only reason I could fathom is a potential safety issue in that a pilot not trained in rescue they may push it past their skill level trying to get to someone in urgent need and crash. but I think most pilots know that sometimes you simply can't do anything but report their location. it feels horrible to have to wave off but it has given them hope because they know they have been found. this is without a doubts bush flying and requires skill. but I say if they are not a rookie let them help

Only reason I can think of is they didn't coordinate with the Fema rescue efforts. Everyone who flew there and was left alone said they worked with Fema including Cleetus who's in the thumbnail.
The reason that's important is they don't end up wasting time sending multiple teams to the same location.
That being said, they should have told these pilots to meet up at a central location so they can join the group effort and coordinate with each other.
