... which is also a good thing. If people can't learn to govern themselves for the sake of their principles and a sense of dignity, then I'm down for whatever tricks then into decency.
Also, it's a bit of a self selective group. I would think people that maintain ANY regularly attended social gatherings and a general sense of participation in their community are probably considerably less likely to be part of the criminal element of that same community.
... but it doesn't mean they truly care about the well being of others. And especially not ALL others (caring about only the people you're interested in is almost as bad as not caring at all).
The best members of a community are the ones who care for others, and live lives that seek to actively benefit them.

When I told the organization I volunteer for I can't work for them on Sunday, they were like: "Why not?". I answered, "Its the Sabbath. The Lord's Day". They were perplexed. "So what. Why can't you come?" I literally had to explain to them like they were aliens from another planet that honoring the Sabbath is one of the 10 Commandments.
