What is expected of everyone is they participate the right way, which is to register with a band and buy a costume - which she did. Also, it's not only black people living in the Caribbean, there are asian, white, mixed race, etc.

Ok so I was born in Toronto to Trinidadian immigrants, have participated in carnival culture in Toronto on many levels (masquerader, spectator, volunteer, etc).
To be fair, Olivia Chow has always loved carnival and has participated in carnival WAAAAAY before she was even in politics. I saw some really old pictures of her playing mas going back to the 80’s (or maybe even 70’s) as a very young woman with face paint. We were having this same discussion long time ago in one of my carnival groups on social media and someone pointed that out.
I know politicians pander, especially the leftist ones, but she’s always been about that carnival life.
Now the dancing however….I can’t defend that 💃💃💃
