I think the schools need to build better and every school should have at least two resource officers and bullet proof doors glass and windows. No way teachers should have guns. Also the front office staff should be armed cause that’s the first place the criminals have to pass through. Guns shouldn’t be inside the classroom.

In my state you have to take an 8 hour training to conceal carry. You don't need any training to open carry. So 40 hours of training is very extensive.

Although a conservative, I am concerned about this. As a former cop, and soldier, I had to go through extensive psychological examinations, and stress testing to be sure that I could carry a gun and knowing when to unholster and when not too. Teachers do not go through this whatsoever. So, I feel we are now placing the children in the hands of people who may become the active shooter, who although can teach, are not psychologically examined nor equipped to be holding a firearm around students. I understand taking a proactive approach, but I would rather see all schools have a resource officer. Seems to me this is also an issue of funds. I don't know, I have concerns, but at least something is being done.

The argument that teachers might go postal…. NOTHING is stopping teachers from doing that anyway, just like NOTHING is stopping students from walking into a school with a weapon. The only thing stopping that from happening at my school is a sign saying “it’s against the law”. At least if we have vetted and trained teachers carrying, when the bad guy ignores the sign, the good guys can defend themselves and their students.

Indiana has had this in place for some time now. Jay County Schools has this program in place. The Superintendent is retired Army Colonel. He was in charge of protecting schools in Afghanistan.
The problem is with the Red for Ed communist teachers union. They have the mentality of the lady in the video, "We are putting a job on a teacher that they should never have."
It is totally voluntary and the teacher has to pass a background check and psyche evaluation. Not everyone is capable of taking a life in high stress situations.
They are training every month and have to qualify at the range once a year. P.S. the janitor volunteered and qualified at the range.

Ohio passed a similar law 2 years ago. Last I heard, about 50 school districts have signed onto the program. I like Tennessee's 40 hour training requirement. Ohio mandates just 28 hours, with 8 hours annual recertification training. I'm a retired administrative agent. We completed the portion of standard police academy training pertaining to handguns and laws - 40 hours.
