How do you even shop lift at a self check-out? In uk if you place an item without scanning the computer stops and asks you to either scan or remove the last item, if you dont they alert security and the lad comes to check upon you.

There was once a checkout lane for a customer with less than x-amount of groceries/goods and a customer could checkout in this lane, or line. There was a cashier attendant (real person) commanding this lane. I say bring those back. Bigger stores would have two of those type cashier-attending lanes/lines. Bring back these. The local Dollar General, that was newly built with two self checkout lanes and seldom a cashier at the counter, suddenly disabled both of the self checkouts and started checking people out with a cashier. I welcome the change, but it was unexpected because we aren't a high crime area.
Our local Walmart hasn't shut down the self checkouts but they are now running 5 or 6 cashiers, which is about half of the available registers. I'm not complaining at all, I welcome the change.

I hate self check out lanes. They used to be convenient, but now the self check out lanes are just as long as the cashier lanes. That's because they only have two to three cashier lanes open so everyone is more or less forced to use the self check out lanes.

Basically, this will create a kind of rubric to measure a neighborhood. If your walmart has a self checkout, it's safe, it doesn't, you're in a bad neighborhood...is what I predict things will become.
Then, at some point, our brilliant woke luminaries will call the position of 'cashier' racist, pointing out the implicit racism of white corporations who don't trust low-income neighborhoods dominated by minorities to be honest, so they'll sue to bring back self checkouts.
This will lead to unavoidable theft which will lead to unsustainable profit loss which will lead to store closures creating a loss of valuable resources for low income communities.
Further activism will result in either a) forcing corporations to remain open, thereby increasing costs nationwide as everyone else will be forced to cover the costs of theft (which we do already) or b) state-sponsored retail for low-income neighborhoods which will create goods and services lower than that of pre-existing companies which will in turn create greater economic disparity in the country.
Of course, economic disparity is linked to a variety of other social ills (crime in particular) all of which will be exacerbated by these moves.
So to sum up...because walmart is removing self checkout, our country is screwed. 😉

Why do you call the person caught shoplifting a young lady? She is certainly no lady, and she's costing all of us money. Walmart has already gone up on their prices on just about everything. I live in Huntsville, Alabama. One of our own city Council members got caught stealing from Walmart and when they investigated they found out he stole over 30 different times because of his status they decided not to hold him, but to release him and have him pay back the money. Even with tons of video footage, he denied the theft, refused to pay the money back, and screamed racism. And for some reason we couldn’t even get him removed from the city Council after all of this this is a town that has one of the highest per capita ratios of PhD’s in the nation and we have city council members doing dumb stuff like this.
