Since 1990, the Sri Lankan government has asked developed countries to help build a new port in the southern region of Sri Lanka and the Hambantota area was chosen!
A design services company from Canada won the Hambantota port competition and the design from the Canadian architectural company will soon be realized, but Sri Lanka's application to world financial institutions such as the IMF and World Bank and the Asian Development Bank was rejected on the grounds that the Sri Lankan government is still facing a war situation with the Tamil tiger separatists!
At that time, Sri Lanka saw that China was intensively developing infrastructure in its own country!

China is very fast in the process of carrying out various large and low-cost projects, which really helps 3rd world countries to immediately accept the real realization of complex infrastructure development such as the construction of the PADMA bridge in Bangladesh which has natural challenges with foundations on very deep and unstable muddy soil. !
During the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020 to 2023, the world suddenly paralyzed and Sri Lanka lost income from tourist visits!
Sri Lanka's tourism contribution reached 30% of GDP and when the pandemic caused problems for the Sri Lankan economy!
Not only Sri Lanka, various other countries are experiencing the same fate, experiencing extraordinary pressure on the state budget!
The island of Bali is similar to Sri Lanka where the tourism sector contributes 40% of income and when the pandemic came, the island of Bali also experienced economic pressure!
Many entrepreneurs on the island of Bali have gone bankrupt, failing to pay their working capital and business debt installments!
Banking in Bali is also affected by the large number of customer defaults!
Luckily, the island of Bali is in a large area of Indonesia and when the lock down was relaxed, many local tourists from Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Makassar and other Indonesian cities stayed in Bali to unwind and work from Bali via the Work From Home system!
The economy of Bali Island is coming back to life thanks to local tourists from Indonesia's 270 million population while Sri Lanka has no local tourists.
Now the pandemic is over and Sri Lanka is back to life and more and more foreign tourists are visiting!
The IMF asked the Sri Lankan government to rent out the Hambantota port to a Chinese operator company for the sake of income from the Sri Lankan state treasury!
What happened in Hambantota was similar to Greece when it went bankrupt so the IMF asked the Pireus port to be managed by a Chinese port operator!
