Chang was a student at Berkeley, part of a cohort of students fighting against Asian American exclusion in the decade after, in the 1980s. (This was before California's 1996 ban on affirmative action created a steep drop off in Black and Latino students on University of California campuses).
Chang says when he was at Berkeley there was evidence schools were purposefully suppressing Asian American admission — not because those seats were going to Black or Latino students, but because they were going to white ones.

A recent Gallup poll found that Black and Latino students are more at risk for dropping out, not because they aren't capable or prepared.

Many students of color can feel psychologically unsafe. See and this is just about school. We have companies out there who will SPECIFICALLY hire minorities to fit with affirmative action to be able to say "see, we have diversity" without actually checking if they're all qualified for it. I saw one recently that an airline is going to hold 50% of its pilot positions for people of color and women. That is inherently a wrong thing to do. In a job where peoples lives are on the line, you would NOT hire someone MORE qualified, in order to fill a diversity quota??? I don't care if it seems unfair that so many white men are pilots, I've seen how open the flight training programs are, and they're not terribly expensive, (its buying a plane that's the super expensive part) if it's only white men going for it, it's because they're apparently the only ones who want to.
Now, this can't be said for all jobs, this is just a specific one I saw recently that is DANGEROUS in it's nature. Imagine you have 75 white male pilots, all overqualified, and you have 75 pilots of varying races/sexes, who ALL have less experience than the white guys, some of which aren't properly qualified. In that situation, why would you WILLINGLY hire only 50 of the white guys, and fill the other 50 with worse pilots? Would you risk the lives of thousands of people every day to fill a diversity quota? I don't think anyone would, or should. But that's what affirmative action wants you to do.
And everyone who's a minority I've spoke to doesn't like it, for that very reason of not knowing if they're ACTUALLY qualified, or if they're just an affirmative action hire. It was a failed attempt to integrate PoC to the work force without being instantly discriminated against, but I think we're at a point now where requiring diversity is only harmful, and we need to focus more on bringing up EVERYONE so we all feel like we have an equal part and shot in this country, as I so believe we should.

I do have to agree with you that it does cause racial animosity. I am a white woman with Multiple Sclerosis. When I was trying to go back to school so I could get a full-time job, I didn't have to be 40 hours on my feet. I was informed by the multiple sclerosis society that I didn't qualify for any scholarships because I was a white woman with Multiple Sclerosis, instead of a black person without it. Talk about really pissed off.

The main problem with affirmative action is that it ignores what SAT scores are for, it was to determine your level of education and match you to a college that starts their courses at that level.
If you go to a community college and take economics 101 , the teacher will start the class with vocabulary lessons then move on to basic economic concepts.
At an Ivy League school the Professor assumes that you already know how the stock market works.
Kids who should have been sent to Community College were instead sent to State Universities and the kids who should've gone to State Universities were sent to Ivy League , where they started every class weeks or months behind their classmates.
This lead to a very high drop out rate for the kids being "Helped" by Affirmative Action.
Instead of owning up to their mistake the Administrators just made excuses for it , inventing terms like "White Privilege" to explain away the failure of the program.

No one is wondering if affirmative action got them into the college. Many wonders if they really belong in the college, not understanding all the stress and changes that took place going to college. Many away from home for the first time... working. Taking heavy course work, and a overload of financial responsibility and debt. Stress will question your ability in everything.

I ran into this in the 1980s. I knew a fellow. He was excellent at his field of study. One day I was talking to him and he was really down. I asked him what was wrong? He said just that. Was he accepted because of his ability or because of his skin color? I assured him at least I thought he was one of the best in the program. I could tell. That doubt still haunted him.
