Otto Warmbier's family met with Trump and he swore to get justice for how he was held and returned only to be in vegetative state and later dying by request of the parents. The former President elevated the status of the brutal North Korean dictator to equal that of the US President, something that former President's Bush & Obama had carefully not done. He then had summits with him & after the first day of the first summit, he tweeted thar Americans could sleep easier because he & Kim were negotiating an agreement that would make the Korean peninsula a nuclear-free zone. To show his confidence, he announced that our annual military maneuvers with South Korea (which North Korea dislikes) were canceled. He expected a similar gesture from Kim, saying North Korea would slow its programs to develop nuclear weapons & a missile system to deliver them, but Kim did not. Former President Trump acted as though they had done those things & rushed to schedule a second summit.
By the time the second summit occurred, our intelligence showed that not only had they not slowed the nuke & missile programs, they had accelerated them & they had, during the summit period, also transformed a conventional submarine into a nuclear submarine. Learning that Kim had made a fool of him, the former President asked Kim to slow the programs & he refused the request coldly, ending the summit.
The former President had expected that the successful summits would be useful in the 2020 election, but Kim outsmarted him, outmaneuvered him & out negotiated him, so he had nothing to show but poor judgment. That is when he asked for the step across the 38th parallel as a photo op for a campaign film. Kim readily agreed because he knew it again made the former President look weak, having to ask his permission. Ms. Taylor Green is wrong about everything. The former President did no damage to Kim. He foolishly raised his status & made him more powerful. Now, he includes him in his rally speech, along with Russian dictator Putin, Chinese dictator Xi & Hungarian leader Orban, saluting the four authoritarian, oppressive figures as strong leaders he admires. In fact, all have taken away the rights of there people, arrested their opponents, ended freedom of the press & limited freedom of speech & all have done serious damage to their faltering economies. They are the last individuals an American leader should praise.
Having shown terrible judgment on North Korea, having made a disaster of pandemic management & with our economy in recession since August & our debt explosing, the former President still did not have a foreign policy achievement for the campaign. So, he prevailed upon the Pakistan government to release the leader of the Taliban from prison & dispatched then-Secretary of State Pompeo to meet with him & sign an agreement to withdraw our forces from Afghanistan. The Secretary complied & he began boasting about ending the Afghan war. But, his foreign policy advisors met with him & told him that the agreement signed would make the withdrawal of our forces messy & dangerous & because the agreement did not even mention the Afghan government & military, they would no longer help us in any way. So, though the withdrawal agreement was signed in February 2020, former President Trump made no move to withdraw our forces over his remaining 11+ months in office. He knew it would be messy & chaotic & he did not want those images on TV during the campaign
Today, the former President says that President Biden surrendered in Afghanistan. He is correct that we , but it was he & Secretary Pompeo who made the surrender. The agreement they effected is available online & everyone should read it. You will not ever have seen a more blatant surrender, with nothing required of the Taliban. All the requirements are on the US, including the responsibility to try & get other nations to recognize their authority. Today, the former President criticizes President Biden for not bringing out all the equipment. Given the contents of the Trump surrender, we are very lucky the President & military were able to get our personnel & the Afghans who helped us out safely. Since the former President signed the surrender & sat doing nothing at all for 11 months, he should be ashamed to utterly the word Afghanistan!
