I mean, would it be better for the US to just sit back and let china take over Taiwan? I generally despise US foreign policy, but what matters is the will and the human rights of the people who live the country in question. In the case of Ukraine and Taiwan, it is in fact Ukraine and Taiwan that best represent the will of their people. It is not in those people’s interests to be sucked up into a large neighboring dictatorship. If the Ukrainians for example were saying they want to be part of Russia and have Putin as their leader, that would be a different story, but they’re not. So the right thing to to is support them. Of course I don’t believe this is why the us is supporting them (if it was about human rights and representation then we would also be supporting Palestinians - and we wouldn’t have committed a million other atrocities for political and economic gain), I believe but we nonetheless should be supporting the people who are under the threat of occupation.

@haoguo2056 Says:
Look, the situation is stupid. Taiwan, for all practical purposes, is a country that effectively governs a little more than a big island that the civil war was effectively over. The U.S. government does not want to recognize Taiwan because the U.S. economy is intertwined with that of the Chinese. China is an unscrupulous greedy bully that will scream and try to bully at any country who is friendly with Taiwan. And the only reason that China hasn’t invaded Taiwan yet is that the U.S. would help Taiwan with American military if invasion did occur.

@42ckev Says:
The thing is the US can't have it both ways... They can't say they don't recognise Taiwan as a nation AND they'll defend its sovereignty... If it's not a nation then it's part of China which means they US legally shouldn't be meddling in their affairs... If it is a nation then it can be defended from invasion... They need to pick a side of the fence to sit on because that ambiguity makes China have a stronger position. Personally i feel like China and Taiwan should be separate nations because of the long standing tensions between the two and they're ultimately incompatible with one another... But it's obviously complex. Taiwan is the last vestige of the rival political party to the CCP whom they fought a bloody war to push back all the way to the last point in Taiwan so in China's eyes, they're a threat. It doesn't help that Taiwan claims ownership over China just like China claims ownership over Taiwan. I really think they need to both drop their claim and recognise one another as a sovereign nation but that's a two way street... Politics is endlessly ambiguous and complex...😅

We do know, the answer is yes they will come to defend Taiwan. Like that or not it will happen.

i think the us strengthening ties with australia, through aukus and its most recent sales/lendings is in large part due to the idea that australia will intervene, or at the very least operate in tandem with the us to intervene. Australia has been anti china for quite some time now, and though im not up to date on the feelings on taiwan in australia, i have some idea that a coalition is in order

@aspie-anarchist9854 Says:
I honestly do not think the us would fight china over taiwan. If china invaded taiwan i think they would give them weapons and train them. I also think they would give korea and japan even more weapons. Now that japan is rearming i think the us would expect taiwand neighbors to deal with it directly. Cause i mean japan and korea absolutely do not want a ccp ruled taiwan.

MacArthur
@Incrementium Says:
Separate of what America does, as an Australian I would be really disappoint in my government if we didn't intervene more directly if China was invaded.
@FO-ik5kh Says:
"Some in Taiwan are flirting with the idea of declaring independence." Why would people in Taiwan think that if Taiwan already IS a free and independent country?
@curtisthomas2670 Says:
China has a more legitimate claim to Taiwan and Russia has a more legitimate claim to parts of Ukraine than Khazars from the Caucasus and Ashkenazis from Germany have on land in the middle east

If some countries decide to send congrats for Donetsk election, what would Ukrainians think. I don’t say that the two situations are the same, but from the Chinese and Ukrainians viewpoint, it is: the territory that’s legally theirs.

China is now a powerful international power like the US. International powers have always and will always compete for the political and economic hegemony. War is inevitable although nukes may force it to be a cold war.

Taiwan is a province of China. Non issue from historical perspective. Its US who is again the provocater. They want to weaken China as they tried to do with Russia. Taiwanese will be Ukrainized if US pokes the bear again. US hegemony is over. Accept that.

@Dthorobad Says:
'Would the US intervene if China invaded Taiwan?' The answer is yes. China has less than 1/3 the floating Tonnage of the US navy, of that they have only 2 carriers. One was a Russian casino, and the other is a clone of the first. Also worth mentioning, the PLA counts the weight of every single thing that floats(including but not limited to tugboats) whereas the US does not include non-combat vessels. Taiwan produces more than 60% of the intermediate-to-high quality microchips and semiconductors globally. China only makes the low-grade ones. The spine of the US military is MADE of those high-end products, and they consider the continued flow of them to be a matter of national security. China has for the past 10 years been pissing off their WHOLE neighborhood(who we are friends and trading partners with) with the only exception being North Korea. Even if the US didn't have assets in the region, the Philipines, Austrailia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan all have reasons to step in. The warhawks in the West-wing wish a wolf-warrior would!
@muhammadfarhan5619 Says:
Well, if US didn't intervene, TSMC would probably fall to China's hand
