Fireside Chat Ep. 306 People Don't Know Real Evil

????

Watch the full episode: https://l.prageru.com/48jkIlZ About half of Americans ages 18-39 cannot identify Auschwitz or any other Nazi death camp, even though most can probably explain preferred pronouns, intersectionality, racism, and sexism. So, why aren't most students learning anything of importance? Dennis provides three reasons why today's young people are not being taught about real evil. Shakespeare is awful, can't stand any of it and it boggles my mind what so many people find fascinating about his works. I can't think of anything I ever studied in school that was worse. I'd rather take calculus, or home economics, the study of rocks, etc. But if anyone can give me a reasonable answer why we have to learn about Shakespeare's works or if anyone for real finds it interesting I'd like to hear it.

How accurate is this claim? I couldn't name American Founding Fathers, but that's because I'm not American so it's very peripheral information (even naming 4 founders of my own country is only possible because it got disestablished and refounded multiple times in the last 1200-ish years, haha). While this part is not actually in the video, "Big Government" as a "modern evil" seems polemic. Anyway, I find when reading about the early last century for instance, people tended to be a lot more educated in some subjects - learning (old) Greek and Latin, ancient history, philosophy... topics I found pretty skimped over in my own education - they were offered but you had to pick between religion and secular philosophy classes, so as a Christian teenager, I naturally picked religion, the other was kind of designated as being "for atheists". While no longer seeing the usefulness of dead languages mostly used in ecclesiastical contexts compared to spending the time on living ones is understandable, not being able to tell Socrates from Confucius from Descartes from Nietzsche is pretty bad. And I'm not sure if we heard about Cyrus even once, for instance. Pre-1789 history was pretty condensed and placed in the earlier years while students are less mature. Both history and scientific knowledge have greatly expanded since ~1900, and the time tables aren't quite properly balanced yet.

I think you’re underestimating young people. Many people do know the founding fathers and many do know the gospels. I think you just have an idea in your head that young people are dumb.
@joymahiko Says:
Especially in America, where you have pampered, spoiled brats that have no clue of the atrocities inflicted by dictators, totalitarians, socialists and sadistic "presidents". They naively assume that can never happen to them. Famous last words. The worst is yet to come for America.

@Mrs.Nesmith98 Says:
I am a college student and I totally agree with this. I find that a ton of my peers in class are very narrow minded individuals, who do not care for history that has happened before them.. there are kids that I have talked to that don't know what WW1 or WW2 was nor do they care.. super sad! They are missing out on so much history but from what I've seen, being stupid is accepted by the young society now.. why? I absolutely have no idea😂

@QuietVega Says:
Classical knowledge is highly subjective. I would disagree with the exclusively Judeo-Christian examples, based purely on modern context. How many Christians would be able to give an accurate account of the beliefs of Islam, Hinduism or Buddhism? Having a non-religious student, in today's growing secular society, maintain recollection of the tenets of ANY religious faith, would appear increasingly difficult. Out of sheer apathy, this information is memorized in a week and summarily forgotten after an exam. Who would quote sonnets from centuries past when you can stream an artist's album the day it is released? I may not know Byron, but I know all the words to Smash Mouth's "All-Star". This brings me no satisfaction. Historical cultural knowledge is only as deep as its value; but I do agree that the value isn't what it once was. Unless it's relevant (or helpful to the desired outcome), it will be left behind.
@OkTxSheepLady Says:
I’m amazed that few seem to know of the true horrors of the last century. But then I remember that I was not aware of what happened 75 years before my birth when I was in my twenties. I have personally known people who fled from Cuban with a dime because to stay was to risk being shot. I have known people who lived behind the Iron Curtain. I have known people who survived the Hungarian revolt. Those people let me see a glimpse of the evil they confronted and escaped.

@halbleavy9900 Says:
You guys should call it the "Liar's" side chat. I see the picture of Hitler there and it reminds me how Germany went out of its way to erase Hitler, the Nazi's, and the SS form German History by name but instead show their deeds. America on the other hand allows Americans to celebrate the evil time of American History of stealing and trafficking humans and call it 'Heritage".
@Federalrepublicofsprout7263 Says:
A lot of liberals are a lot smarter than we think. On top of that, there are plenty of conservative Christian children who also couldn't answer any of these questions. Reciting basic history and your religion isn't exactly a gotcha. Real evil is the Jungles of the Cambodian killing fields. Andrew Jackson's trail of tears. Leopard II's private property. Suharto's mass killings that surpassed Castro 100 to 1. In my opinion, the worst event in human history was Japan's occupation of Nanking (that's just a personal opinion, it can very between perspective) If you want to talk real evil in history, it's there.

@Paul-bs5wl Says:
Not really related to the chat. But it probably isn't fair to put ol' Benito in that thumbnail in such company. A tyrant he might've been, but he really seems more like a cowardly jester in way above his head in the company of men like Stalin and Hitler. He comes across more like extremely callous and stupid than truly evil. Probably would've been more on point to use Pol Pot.

All notorious regime are rooted from Marxism. Marxism often linked to communism, but Fascism and Nazim are cousins of communism. Benito Mussolini was a Marxist and adopted many marxist ideas to Faacist Italy. This inspired Adolf Hitler to model NSDAP after Fascist Party asldoting many Marxist ideas. A lot of founding members of the Nazi Party are leftist. Karl Marx is a self loathing anti-semite.

I’m 27, so I was in school not too long ago. The disconnect between Dennis’s fantasy of what a school is today and what school, including college, is actually like is STUNNING. Granted, certain districts or states have different standards and styles than others, but apart from Dennis’s religious grievances, he’s just factually wrong. A couple of anecdotal examples don’t validate generalizations.
