It doesn't have anything to do with NATO. Russia has 140 million people and loses about 100,000 people every year. The US has 320 million people and gains about 1-3 million a year legal and illegal immigrants. China has 1.2 billion. Putin needed the 40 million Ukrainians to compete with the US economically and militarily.

No NATO country has ever invaded or taken one inch of Russian territory.
If Ukraine had been in NATO, it would not have been permitted to launch last months invasion into Russia and occupy hundreds of miles of their country.
No NATO country, individually or collectively, poses a bigger threat to Russia than China does.

Russia cannot find good allies... In just the time since about the middle of WW2, Germany betrayed them & invaded, then China left their alliance (& they are recently sort of coming back to good terms again), the USSR split, many Russians & USSR states suffered from famine/assassinations/other terrors, & during the whole time they saw the US & its allies as enemies & participated in proxy wars, even to this day.
Japan has a history of war with Russia. WW2 & more.
France has a history of war with Russia. Napoleon & more.
Finland has a history of war with Russia. WW2 & more.
Then of course Ukaine, Georgia, & other counties have been invaded by Russia.
To add to this, their current "allies" in the "Axis of Resistance" are not the most reliable or long-term.
Maybe Russia is TOO big...? It may always not get along with its neighbors & other countries. They should probably sell land again like they did with Alaska.

Just keep things in proportion: Russia has very strong ties with most of Asia, all of Africa and a significant part of Central and South America. The BRICS+ has the same economy as the G7.
