The workers there decided in 1856 to organize a day of complete stoppage together with meetings and entertainment as a demonstration in favor of the eight-hour day. The day of this celebration was to be April 21. At first, the Australian workers intended this only for the year 1856. But this first celebration had such a strong effect on the proletarian masses of Australia, enlivening them and leading to new agitation, that it was decided to repeat the celebration every year."* *** The largest online progressive news show in the world. FDR responded to the will of the people. That's what public servants are supposed to do. Yes, John, he did come into office with a vision for improvements and prosperity for the American people in mind. He campaigned on it. Hence the New Deal and the campaign song "Happy Days are Here Again".

Modern marxists have got nothing but sneering, as if they are superior, the new beorgoise. They absolutely cant say anything that is not a sneer. Disgusting. Here's sneering at you sneerers!
@Oscuros Says:
Everywhere on planet Earth celebrates May Day on May Day because of the Haymarket Riots except for the US. You have "labor" day instead, a day that literally no one else cares about on planet Earth. Not really leaders of the free world at all, then. You should see China's May Day Parades in honour of the Haymarket Martyrs. What a shame none of you have the stones over there to just be the same as the rest of us, like with not having spree shootings or with the having free healthcare. I wonder who the martyred dead in this famous song's lyrics are about. I guess you guys would be too scared to ever sing it or call Republicans pinkos, like I do online, they never have any answers to that one either. Stay beaten, America. The people's flag is deepest red, It shrouded oft our martyred dead, And ere their limbs grew stiff and cold, Their hearts' blood dyed its ev'ry fold. Then raise the scarlet standard high. Within its shade we'll live and die, Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer, We'll keep the red flag flying here. Look 'round, the Frenchman loves its blaze, The sturdy German chants its praise, In Moscow's vaults its hymns are sung Chicago swells the surging throng. Then raise the scarlet standard high. Within its shade we'll live and die, Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer, We'll keep the red flag flying here. It waved above our infant might, When all ahead seemed dark as night; It witnessed many a deed and vow, We must not change its colour now. Then raise the scarlet standard high. Within its shade we'll live and die, Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer, We'll keep the red flag flying here. It well recalls the triumphs past, It gives the hope of peace at last; The banner bright, the symbol plain, Of human right and human gain. Then raise the scarlet standard high. Within its shade we'll live and die, Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer, We'll keep the red flag flying here. It suits today the weak and base, Whose minds are fixed on pelf and place To cringe before the rich man's frown, And haul the sacred emblem down. Then raise the scarlet standard high. Within its shade we'll live and die, Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer, We'll keep the red flag flying here. With heads uncovered swear we all To bear it onward till we fall; Come dungeons dark or gallows grim, This song shall be our parting hymn. Then raise the scarlet standard high. Within its shade we'll live and die, Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer, We'll keep the red flag flying here.

FDR came into office intending to repeal Prohibition, eventually. The people said "NO, NOW!" And he did it.
@kaninma7237 Says:
Teddy Roosevelt came in to do a lot of good, and he did it. He had some problematic policies, but he promised to do some good things and did.

This is from not voting. Not just for President but all elections
@THMILLER Says:
After working over here in Europe i can say that the US workers have only maybe 15% of what workers have here in Europe. People back home in the USA are shocked when i tell them i have 30 days paid vacation, unlimited sick days, and a livable wage from 1 job just to name a few things.
@ckg1776 Says:
8 hour work days are gay! Way better working 10 to 12 as you earn more currency.
@merbst Says:
I've talked with people in more than 50 countries on an app called HelloTalk, which all have May 1st as their national Labor Day, but here in the United States we never have. I have spent many days reading up on the Labor movements of 1917 to 1919, like the Wobblies, and the power of the General Strike.

Greetings from Finland where May Day is a major holiday! I took part in my party's, the Left Alliance's, May Day parade and a party member told the story of the holiday's US origins when presenting the speakers of the event. On a more personal note, following the progressive politics of the US actually made me more invested in my own country's decision-making and inspired me to join the party I currently am a member of. Thank you, TYT, and happy May Day in retrospect! :)
@ekrenz5268 Says:
I live and work in Montana. Montana is rich with labor history and learning about it has been a pleasure. Also AFL has been corrupt as shit.

Without labor, there is no wealth. Labor is superior to capital.
@donaldthustra_2997 Says:
Communists aren't really human, so anything you do to oppress them is justified.
@nonnyj81 Says:
Eugene v debs is the only one who fought for workers rights and he wasn't even president. But he ran for it. And don't get me started with teddy. He did squat. The Roosevelts aren't exactly the heros of the working class as our "history" books made them out to be.
@Miapetdragon69 Says:
The closest I can get to that answer would be JFK... Now I'm not old enough to remember him I wasn't born yet Nixon was still president when I was born but he's on his way out so I grew up under Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan and then so on.. I guess each president offered at least one good thing during their presidency...
@LindaJohnson-e9y Says:
Harry Truman was a President that talked about civil right. He desegregated the military and passed the GI Bill of Rights.
@mikew6060 Says:
No true American cares about mayday it's nothing but a communist holiday
@JohnSmith-il7jn Says:
Notice all the little commies that come out of the woodwork when you praise their favorite holiday. Communism seems fun when you live in your parent's basement. lol.

I bet The Young Jerks love their Lenin, Stalin, and Mao. On this day in May, the little communists drool of the past and what could have neen. Sad 😭. Capitalism wins all the time, commie lovers.
@MichaelKnaepen Says:
The irony is that the cops who tortured, beat, shot and raped protesters, are now enjoying the benefits fought by the people they targeted...
@JohnSmith-il7jn Says:
TYT loves Vladmir Lenin, Josef Stalin and Mao Zedong. All who celebrated May Day and avowed communist atheists. Nice crowd.
@zeusathena26 Says:
May Day has a history that's thousand's of years old. The traditional celebration is celebrating that warm weather is coming back, & that winter is gone. This came from northern European groups like the Celts.
@ssjrose9641 Says:
Thats the problem now, in order to get true labor reform (i.e. paid sick leave, parental leave, 6 weeks of paid vacation, wage increases) millions need to walk out and protest. Otherwise nothing will happen.
@romulus463 Says:
Yeah, let the government provide better wages, just as those of the 19th Century who wanted Universal Slavery advocated, along with welfare programs providing the daily needs, government provided healthcare and repeal of the Second Amendment. Sociology For The South by Pro-Slavery Advocate George Frizhugh. However, back in the 19th Century, too many people saw it was their own duty to not only provide for their own families, but also to store against future wants, like bad year of harvest, long winters, other things that may create want so Universal Slavery didn't appeal to them. But today, nine meals from societal collapse, (Average household maintains three days worth of food) a lot of people are willing to sell their liberties for the illusion of security and call government "Massa."

@andrewwinslow9315 Says:
REVOLUTION NOW! We need to have Socialist States in Every Nation, and unite under one flag. Classes need to be dismantled
@gordontall2441 Says:
Why does Genk still allow these labor stories on TYT? He shut down union organizing at his own company. I guess he thinks that people don't know.

America has 24/7 propaganda to make sure the sheep kneel before the militant state. You aren't allowed to critique the police or the military at all because all the boot licking beta simps will label you anti-American for trying. None of this is coincidence. It's the result of long standing policy

@edwardgrant7708 Says:
Workers should have more rights. Unfortunatly Cenk did not think so in 2016.
@alundavies1016 Says:
A long time before it was International Workers Day (which commemorates the workers struggle), it was celebrated all over the old world, starting in pagan times.
@lisadioguardi5742 Says:
The part about the pardons is a little misleading. The executions were in 1887, Altgeld wasn't governor until 1893. He also opposed the use of forced prison labor and opposed Cleveland's order to send troops to end the Pullman strike.
