I think maybe Ana might be slightly confusing desiring combative stimulation in conversation for appreciating being genuine. Sometimes an asshole is an asshole, doesn't matter whether he's being genuine about that. That nice old lady partly acknowledges that with her saying she was "a little trouble".
But then again, that happens to a lot of people as they get older and approach their get off my lawn phase, and get into how kids these days don't know shit, or are lazy, etc. So I like this old lady using her salt in a positive way. I think that is the best way to use that cantankerous part of yourself, helping others with it. I can’t list all the red flags but please look up the red flags for abusers, they follow the same base patterns and it could possibly save your life since some abusers, when they feel control over you slipping (like you’re gonna leave ‘em) they will kill you and your children, it’s the ultimate control over you, for them. If you’re a women, please be safe, half of all female homicide victims were killed by an intimate partner or former one. I have always said the "old people dont become bitter, bitter people become older" and now I am 67 I can say with 100% certainty that I was right.
I used to run a team of broadband engineers on the south east coast of England which is incredible popular with retired middleclass pensioners. at least 50% of our clients were over 65 many much older. I would see on average between 5 and 8 older customers a day. I quickly leaned that most of them like to talk many are widows who are cut off from their families having moved from other parts of the country. As I was close to retirement you would be amazed at how at ease they were with me. Most of them were lovely really lovely but some of them were racist bigots of the worst kind. Your right Anna as they get older they dont care what they say and they dont take care who they are talking to. So imagine my pain when almost every week I had to listen to someone talking racist about immigrants and coloured people especially as my wife is Algerian and my kids mixed race. I couldn't say anything obviously but I marked them as troublesome on our system and they were blacklisted for any engineer who was not white British and that meant they might wait a month to get any service especially as 80% of the regions engineers were either of ethnic origin or partners of same.
So sorry Anna wisdom does not come with age neither does bigotry the only thing that really comes with old age is the "I dont care what anyone thinks anymore".
On a funnier note I cannot tell you how many widows have hit on me. I am a fit 67 year old, slim with all my hair and most of my own teeth so I suppose I am fair game but my wife would kill me if I so much as agreed to a cup of tea with them, and for some strange reason she has radar my wife I knew that early on and its one of the reasons I fell for her, she could spot a fraud from 50 metres in a crowd and her natural lie detector is something to behold.

My best employees are all "retired". As a project manager, is so hard to get real advise to apply to real project conflicts... except I'd you got a retiree whom doesn't have any fucks left to give. Best work advise I get is from them. No bullshit, no carrots in a stick, just honest feedback.
