You should read Carl Hiaasens’ 1998 book “Team Rodent, how Disney devours the world” all about Disney, and it is long over-due an update after this! Here’s the description of one chapter in the book from Wiki…..

Disney having self governance is the only reason Walt built the Magic Kingdom in Florida. Yes, they wanted to create an atmosphere that wouldn't be encroached by run down motels and seedy souvenir shops. That sort of stuff popped up on International Drive and now the Drive is littered with closed souvenir shops and cheap, run down motels. I'm glad Disney kept that sort of stuff away from the Magic Kingdom. That's what guests pay to go to Disneyworld for. Foreign tourists pay through the nose to have a quality experience and memorable vacation. Without Disney, Florida would not be the tourist destination it is.
