A random chance of birth completely shifts identity. Take Crimea. If there hadn’t been an occupation, those kids would identify differently. Just 100 meters—the border between Kherson and Crimea—changed their whole worldview. Or look at Valka, on the border between Latvia and Estonia. In the same town, a cashier might see themselves as Latvian, while the customer considers themselves Estonian. And they could be at war tomorrow. It’s bizarre how being born a few meters apart can mean having a completely different identity. Even in Ukraine, the way history is told feels similar to France’s narrative of “always existing.” I get why this is done—national security, identity, propaganda. But let’s be honest: Prince Volodymyr in the 10th century had no concept of Ukraine or Russia.
