Once the experiment of masculine domination had been implemented, children were generally considered chattels. Few were educated, and those were males only. Rich boys were educated by tutors or went to expensive private schools. Only girls of a high social status were taught anything, and then just a few limited subjects at home. For a brief period during the Renaissance, however, both girls and boys attended local schools unless they had to earn money for their family. Often students sat on forms facing one another and the older children taught the younger ones. This promoted harmony and respect. Then the Industrial Revolution came and employers needed a labour force that could read simple instructions and operate machines, so the forms were turned round and children faced the teacher, who stood in front of the class. The children disconnected from one another and this gave rise to separation and its consequences. For years, teaching has been left brain, consisting of learning by rote or absorbing and regurgitating other people’s ideas. For many, it has been boring and frustrating. Currently, children are massed into huge schools, built to nurse the egos of politicians, that have nothing to do with educating or nourishing the students. The ‘one size fits all’ system has shut down individuality, creativity and new ideas. With the rising frequency, many youngsters are now too sensitive to cope with this broken system, and more and more mental health problems are being reported in children and teachers. The seeds of change are sprouting, with more children than ever being home educated.
