The pla is also doing this in laos, thailand and vietnam via air, Philippines, malaysia, indonesia brunei by sea. China is trying to intimidate southeast asia in its entirety. Cambodia and Myanmar are already effectively under chinese rule even if they dont want to admit it themselves. But between them they have given the ccp a way to cut southeast asia off from the world if nothing is done soon. Thailand and vietnam alone could possibly withstand the pla without outside help but with china controlling cambodia and failed attempt to do the same in laos has made it very hard for thailand and vietnam to come together. Their forces combined could rival Chinas military. If southeast asia unites completely and only excludes the tiny cambodian army and the very busy burmese army, they stand a good chance beating china, but we all know that the ccp will probably use nukes on it all if it feels like it is losing. Thus, outside help and influence could prevent a huge tragedy from ever occuring if say, the US does the same as the uk and its allies. And are willing to come to the aid of countries and know they'll come.
