Muslims are not a “Race.” You might not even be able to classify them as "Brown People." Islamist Iran is mostly light-skinned. Palestinians didn't even emerge as a group until after the 1967 war. Who they are are the remnants of the Ottoman Empire, which was occupying Syrian and Palestinian territory for centuries, and are a mix of all the ethnicities in the Ottoman Imperialist project, Turks, Greeks, Romans, Kurds, Jews, Arabs, and though the official religion was imposed by the Islamic Caliphate, it included others (who had to pay a special tax for not being Muslim). This was the Empire that at the time of it's collapse, after being on the wrong side in WWI, was fresh from massacring Armenians, Greeks and other non-Muslims by the hundreds of thousands, which is why they needed to be occupied and dismantled by the western powers. We can agree that the Israeli devastation of Gaza is inhumane and heavy handed, and small-minded Israels might indeed be viciously racist, but the war against Hamas, which is a racist, radical Islamist group, is a legitimate threat, and their actions on Oct 6th were clearly intended to demonstrate their capacity for viciousness. But either they miscalculated what the Israeli response would be, or they intended it to be a massive martyrdom for their stated cause of destroying Israel. Neither makes sense. There are many other peoples, like the Kurds in Turkey and Syria, who are an ethnic culture, who are denied nationhood in today’s realpolitik, and who don’t engage in hopeless, large scale massacres on their rivals. Israel needed to respond, but at which point should they have stopped? Should they have believed that Islamist radical Hamas could be diplomatically engaged after that stunning escapade? Or maybe Hamas should have said, sorry, we should negotiate now, here are your hostages, my bad? Hamas is the de facto voice of Gazans, and that voice says, no end in hostilities until Israel is destroyed. I don’t know who in Gaza voted for that, since they don’t vote, but obviously many thousands are shoulder to shoulder with Hamas. Hamas declared war, which is different from mere protest. War is an all-out effort, one doesn't stop when the enemy's casualties match your side's; it stops when they SURRENDER. Like Hirohito, Like Robert E. Lee. The campus protests here are mostly for humanitarian cease fire, but many carry signs like “Queers for Hamas” or “Free Hamas, Death to Israel.” Maher is 100% correct in criticizing that kind of stupidity. We on the left condemn the Religious right’s crusade against women’s rights, and against religious authoritarianism in general, but those Islamist groups are far worse in that area, they should find out about women’s rights under Hamas. Maher had become a grouchy old curmudgeon, to be sure, and he has always railed against religion, especially Islam, so this is the dead horse he likes to beat. But Hamas is not in any way innocent. The formation of Israel was not colonialism, it was a return of the indigenous people to their ancient homeland, in the aftermath of the worlds greatest genocide committed upon them, and after centuries of colonialism by the Ottomans. Billionaire Arafat successfully created the myth of the Palestinian ethnicity, and refused the offer of statehood twice.
