I have spent my entire life fighting my weight and wondering why I could put myself through university, adopt children from overseas, move to a foreign country to work, etc. but couldn't seem to control this one part of my life. I've always hiked, biked, swam and worked out, but I couldn't control my eating. I scoffed at the term "food addiction" because it didn't make sense to me that you could be addicted to something that is vital to survival. Boy, was I wrong. The bring of a food addict lights up the same way the brain of a heroine addict's does. It's a dopamine issue and it's powerful. It's also worse than an alcohol or drug addiction because those addicts stay away from their drug, the peope and environments where their drug exists, but the food addict must walk the aisles of their drugs, prepare their drugs for themselves and others, and cannot escape it. It's like putting a glass of liquor in front of the alcholic and saying you can have one sip but must stop. Could they? Not likely. So overcoming a food addiction is a true nightmare. I am in my 50s still trying to get out of that nightmare. I don't condone body positivity for obese people, but I do plead for sympathy and understanding and an end to jokes.
