It's supposed to deter people from even thinking about criminal activity. Not only will you go to prison, but your life will be permanently ruined. You won't even be able to vote. Okay no one injured, no property damage, you could have been found sleeping in your car in a parking lot BUT your keys are still in the ignition. So you do your time, pay all your fines, deal with the license suspension which i believe is one year, pay a reinstatement fee and you can get a new license, you're legally able do drive again.
