Think about it: if criminals won’t follow crack laws, does that mean we should all be allowed to use crack? Or if criminals won’t follow murder laws, should we all be allowed to murder? It’s a slippery slope, and if your argument leads to this kind of nonsense, it’s a bad argument. People love to bring up Prohibition to justify this. But Prohibition was a terrible law. It didn’t solve the problems it was supposed to, like preventing drunk driving, stopping people from getting impaired, or preventing domestic violence. Instead of banning alcohol outright, they could have set up more reasonable laws, like drinking curfews, limited sales hours, or stricter punishments for drunk driving and domestic abuse. That way, people could still drink, but with regulations that minimized the risks. When it comes to gun control, we should be thinking the same way. We need red flag laws, background checks, mandatory training, and limits on certain attachments and types of firearms. These measures would seriously lower the number of shootings while still allowing people to own guns. And remember, we had an assault weapons ban from 1994 to 2004. This law banned the manufacture and sale of certain semi-automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines. During this period, studies showed a decline in gun violence involving these weapons. Although the ban expired and wasn’t renewed, it demonstrated that such laws can be effective.
