Star Wars was plain fun, clearly good guys won and you could cheer them on without any reserve doubts, it was enjoyably simple, and the visuals were good. All that made it feel like a breath of fresh air after years during which most entertainment had kind of felt like visiting a somewhat dingy club filled with cigarette smoke. It was that contrast, I think, that mostly made it the success it became.
