We can do a lot AND still get a balanced life and decent education, but by my teens we had neither, by my 20s it was really, really bad. We were disciplined and raised well enough that we were well behaved and respectful enough that we honestly didn't provoke the vast majority of parental ire we got, plus it's the only reason, along w God/prayers, that we didn't get more (direct) physical abuse. But the "lack" of that server to make it, along w the brainwashing, that much harder for us to know if we had biblical justification to DO anything about any of this abuse. Whether leave or whatever. And the couple times other family or a sibling who'd left DID call the cops etc., nothing def. physically abusive was going on at the time so, as long as us kids said we wanted to stay - and I for one was too unsure as a Christian on what else I COULD say, besides not trusting my relatives or foster care, for my little siblings... . Anyway, as I'm going on too long & getting a bit lost... . My Dad has 7 siblings, all also still married, and I have over 30 1st cousins, most of whom are a ways into adulthood, married, having kids, Christian and never been divorced. Among me and MY (7) siblings on the other hand ... I am the only one married who's still on 1st marriage, and only my 2 sisters are currently married at all. Neither of them have kids. My 2 bros who have kids are both still under my Dad's authority/influence/on the farm, are both divorced ( didn't have a license either, so, don't know how financially incentived they were.. ) and the one did come back and try again for awhile, they had their 3rd kid, and it's totally over now tho I heard.. and the other one, the ex was totally out of pic while, then came and took the girls to visit her fam., but moved to another state and that was yrs ago now. SOOO. I'm all for obeying God no matter what, btw. , on that front. The answer is not to decide God must be wrong or we just can't obey, it's too hard. The answer, in this case I think, is that maybe there's room for being too legalistic in view of what's Biblical grounds for separation or div. , and the problem of community and extended family being either unwilling, unable or unskilled in truly getting to the bottom of what's actually happening ( in my mom's case, she didn't act very emotional or "psycho" over it all. I'm NOT her. I take after Dad and no WAY could I be more obviously the victim by the time we're years into the situation, sins happen on both sides, and my seeming emotional & mental health gets called into Q., muddying the waters)... helping hold these men ( or wives, as the case may be) accountable ! And for PETE'S SAKE PPL ( not here, but crap I heard when my own husband WAS being very negligent and somewhat abusive early in our marriage)... be careful with just saying "well, marriage takes work ! " as if the lady reaching out for help hasn't went into marriage knowing that, expecting that, realized that doesn't mean she won't have to face challenges NOT expected, and prayerfully suck it up. That she hasn't already been working her @$$ off for weeks, months or years. Man alive.
