Credits do not lower your taxable income, they lower your tax liability, which is the tax you owe. So if you owe $1,000 in taxes let's say and the credit is for $2,000 then $1,000 goes to your tax liability and the other, if it is a refundable credit which Child Tax Credit is, you get the other $1,000 as a refund. If it is a non-refundable credit you only get up to your tax liability. What are called "above the line deductions" is what lowers your taxable income such as Student Loan interest, Educator expenses, money put into a Traditional IRA and a few other items will lower your taxable income. But if I just need assistance with maybe only $300 max, I can't get help when I need it. My rent went up $150 for no reason. I eat beans, tortillas and macaroni because it's all I can pretty much afford but I get zero help. I have a food share but I work during the time it gives out food and I don't know anyone where I live that could pick it up for me... I'm not someone who enjoys getting assistance but a tiny bit of help when I needed it would help so much. Sry, just venting.
