It just have to be really cold and your electric car become useless. Now imagine if any of these people were on an emergency. I like the idea of an electric car but the technology is not there yet. I don't know why they keep pushing these cars as the end all be all. Why not try hybrid first. Where a battery is present for some situations but you still have the reliability of a gas car. And it's not just what happens with cold weather. The gird isn't ready also. Many states already regulate the energy consumption of the people. Some have black outs from time to time when the grid is pressured. The car tech isn't ready, the charging tech isn't ready and nor the power grid or architectural infrastructure is ready. And these is such a hazardous situation. Been stranded, at the mercy of other people. And in Chicago of all places. If the charging stations are so susceptible to weather. Why don't they make them in close garages? Not only would it be far more secure to park your car on a garage that it's door close and it's safe to leave the car there and not be mugged. But they could regulate the ambient temperature better. Even if they don't put a garage door. And enclose space would retain the heat of the car warming itself up. Instead of getting immediately cooled by the circulating wind. Like seriously. All the garage I go to wash my car. They all have an enclosed space when I park the car and have those pressure hose you put quarters on. You mean to tell me that gas stations that are decades old can have something like that. But electric car chargers can't afford to put some walls and a roof? Oh and Anthony, another thing. There is no regulation for those chargers. So what you are charged. Unlike gas that has a maxed price per gallon on every given time. They can charge you whatever they want per watt or time. They could charge you for how long you are there. And purposely have the charger charge slower than it needs to keep you there longer.>> <<@snapduke says : I would never own a tesla. EV buyers should learn about li-ion batteries before buying. If you long range road trip your EV itโ€™s not a bad idea to have a small backup generator just in case a charger is down. At least youโ€™d have a warm place to stay/wait as it trickle charges. Or just buy a gas vehicle. Think about it, with an ICE vehicle, do you wait until its almost empty before refilling? For the most part, these folk waited until the cars were really low in charge before they went to the chargers. Additionally, my guess is the cars were not pre -conditioned (heat the battery) prior to trying to charge. The lack of preconditioning is the thing that will really slow the charging process, because the saupercharger will try to heat the battery before it can charge it. And yes, I have a '22 Tesla, that a I charge at home outside.>> <<@smania7575 says : As someone who understands what happens to lithium ion batteries in the cold, this was an obvious result of the winter. Most Tesla owners have a home chargers. For those that do not they rarely if ever need to charge from 0% to 100% itโ€™s not like that. You are just picking out a unique situation that likely will only happen a few times a year in most areas. It will work fine 99% if the time and will continue to improve. You act like we are trying to make you buy one. If you donโ€™t like them donโ€™t purchase one. Iโ€™ve seen people wait in line for gas tons of times. During storms people wait for gas. During price issues people wait in line. I have only used super chargers a hand ful of times when I am out of town and they are super fast. Also the cars shows you if the super charger is busy when you check on the computer. It make take a little extra planning but for all the benefits Iโ€™ll stick with my Tesla for now.
