The difference is: in Soviet Union, it is the government enforcing the rules. Here, it is the rest of society enforcing their social preferences. In other words, most of society doesn’t like racists and bigots. Get with the program or be left behind, powerless.

I honestly think it’s that a lot of moderates, independents and center-left democrats don’t like republican policy. Their stance on guns, healthcare, minimum/living wage, environmental issues, and abortion in particular. Republicans seem overly harsh or even draconian to them. So, despite not liking the Biden administration, liberal academia, and wokesters in general, they are repelled by the republican platform itself. If republicans would deliver on even 1 or 2 left-wing policies, I think they’d crush the Dems.

As a one from post-USSR country West always has misconceptions and false interpretations because you don’t understand context. The main factor west faces — absolute distrust in government which is right thing to do, people just don’t vote or do any things that legitimize government, it is just a world for people who worry about politics, thats why you see such segregation, votes do not change anything, it is just a mascarade(I remind you about hundreds of thousands of beaurocrats) for legitimization of stationary robber(government), it is just the thing to absolve responsibility to the “citizens” like “You voted for them yourself, at the next election you will choose correctly” but it gets worse and worse and worse. We live in Kakistocracy. USSR hasn’t fell because people wanted or needed “truth”, it is not only false but also truth is always only a symptom of freedom and free market(either way truth is not needed). USSR fell because people just lived like there was no government at all, they just stopped to follow the rules, laws regulations etc. and gvm could not do anything about it.

The world is empirically not as bad as it was from 2016-2020. 🤷🏽♂️

In australia, in the state of Victoria, the most locked down state in the world, they just reelected the dictator (premiere) of that state. So as I say to them, dont whinge about any bad that happens, you voted it in yourselves. Same with america, if they voted or failed to vote to get rid of the lefties, then buckle up and suck up the suffering for you did not do enough to get the right back in power.

People do hate dems in US and trudeau in canada, but they want just less corruption, not conservatism. People in this chat doesn't understand why people keep voting for liberals. It's simple, because those people are liberals, they only hate the corruption part of it. Like spending 1.7m on a public bathroom in San Francisco. Long story short, ideological lines doesn't really get switched that easily no matter how shitty representatives get.

Canada: The conservatives had two great opportunities in 2019 and 2021 but they blew it by electing two duds as leaders (Andrew Scheer and Erin O'Toole). Trudeau got 1 million fewer votes in 2019 than 2015 and 200K fewer votes than the Conservatives but managed to win a minority. The Conservatives in Canada look like amateurs compared to the same parties in Australia and the UK. The new leader Pierre Polievre has already inflicted 2 self imposed wounds in hashtagging MGTOW and pushing crypto which has tanked. Not professional at all.

I agree with you completely Lauren, I can’t believe that these incompetent politicians keep getting elected and they are not suitable for the positions they hold. We need a fresh outlook on the way we elect our politicians, so far we have to tolerate the same old political system that is not being representative of the citizens of our country. Maybe like the Swiss have more referendums on important issues and policies. I can’t imagine our knowledgeable and experienced farmers are being asked to cut back on their use of fertilizers by a ignorant, leader like Trudeau who has no concepts of how to properly farm, is trying to dictate what our knowledgeable and responsible farmers are allowed to use in the process of fertilizer use on their own farms, and that they cut back on their use of fertilizers by 30%. How are we going to be able to help the poorer nations if we cut back on the production of our food products, all because Justin wants to appear like an environmental hero. All for the sake of his ego. Maybe a referendum would be better for our own democratic system to have a say in what course we are going to embark on in different areas of our society.

<<@robinchatterjee8331

But the secret ballot allows silent majority to vote freely. No one will know who they have voted for. So, in front of authorities they may have to pretend that they support them but while voting they can vote freely and defeat the dictators in power. Still, the Democrats have been able to win so many seats. So, it means either the voting system is faulty or there are many people who prefer Democrats. Even if they don't like Democrats that much but they probably dislike Republicans more. Secondly, not everyone has interest in politics. Many people don't talk or think about it. Thirdly, not having other options may also be leading voters being unhappy. There are either Democrats or Republicans. No other political party is even close to these two. Perhaps people need other options as well. Fourthly, Democratic party provides a lot of freebies to people. Once people are addicted to freebies, they will continue voting for Democrats no matter what. They will not think long term.
